Ultima 5 for iPad

Just like the name of the project suggests, this was an attempt to port Ultima 5 to Apple’s iOS mobile operating system. The project was put on hold pending the release of iOS 4.2, and never resumed development thereafter.

During its active period, the project involved running Litchie’s DOSpad (a port of DOSBox) to serve as a wrapper for the game; this would necessarily have required jailbreaking an iPad in order to play the game.

Note: the image accompanying this post is just something I threw together in five minutes from a couple of images I found online. It is not an actual picture of Ultima 5 running on an iPad in real life.

That’s really great news. Dospad runs Ultima VI perfectly and I’ve been playing it. Only problem is you need to play it in vertical mode as there is no customisable keypad for all the ultima keys as of yet. Also only adlib music support.

Would be great to see Ultima V with midi music. Keep up the good work.

The thing about the keyboard is, you actually need almost the whole keyboard to play Ultima V! Certainly for conversations, but even just the regular command shortcuts use almost the whole alphabet, and in my experience your situation changes rapidly enough that you need all of them in a short span of time. Even the number keys come into play when singling out party members or choosing how long to camp.

I can see the optimal way to play will be with an external keyboard–but if I can watch full length movies on my 3rd gen iPod nano’s 1.5 inch screen (and I can), then I can play Ultima 5 on the smaller screen in vertical mode.
