Ultima 5 Redux began as, per the developer’s description of it, “a remake of Ultima 5 with improved graphics and combat that utilizes original game data to ensure the core game is as close to the original as possible.” What that meant at the time was that Brad Hannah would be using the Unity engine to take the original data for Ultima 5 to create a voxel-based, isometric 3D reworking thereof. Said remake would have maintained an overall old-school aesthetic, using the Ultima 5 tileset as the basis for its graphics. However, it would also have added a few more modern contrivances, including improved ambient and twilight lighting, voxel-based models, and a vastly improved UI for controls and conversations.
As of late 2024, Brad has shifted away from using the Unity engine, and has instead been re-implementing aspects of the project using the Go-based, 2D Ebiten engine. As before, his overall goal is to keep “the charm” of the original, while still providing a cleaner UI and graphics, among other improvements.
Lots of updates on the development blog for this project. Very fun stuff. The alpha works really nice and gives a good taste of what it may be like when completed.
He has also combined the project into a single github repository now, I think, so one of the links above is not working anymore.
Ah, good to know. I’ll fix that when I can.
I’m trying to find the keybinds for the game. I remember the old ones, but in this game when I press L for look, after that is seems the “L” is automatically now pressed. I can’t move anymore or anything, if I use the arrow to move, it just says ‘you see a chair’ etc. it keeps making me look and I can’t get out of it.
Hello, I need help. Whenever I press L for look, keeps me looking now matter what. I can’t move anymore, any movement key instead makes me look in that direction. You see a chair, you see a chair, etc. instead of moving toward that chair. How do I get out of looking at stuff? The same thing happens with any other key such as O for open. I open a door, then I can’t move or do anything. Trying to move north it will say ‘nothing to open’
